WHO WE ARE

what do ZEBRAs have to do with all this??

I AM A ZEBRA's Evolving Story

Beginnings

Ingrid Masterton PT MS is IAMAZEBRA's founder and principal. Ingrid survived a rare (like a zebra in the USA) childhood cancer and a life time of the health effects of several cancers and their treatment. She is a physical therapist and when she could no longer physically meet that demand, she moved into academia and teaching within health professional education. No longer able to physically maintain an academic career, she attended Second City Training Center (SCTC) and discovered how improv could be applied to so many of the challenges that she'd faced within healthcare across her 'patient' and professional practice and academic lives.

Reinvention

Ingrid, who cannot seem to say no to a challenge, sought individual training and direction from Second City theater professionals to create performance pieces that gave her, and many other stakeholders in healthcare, a voice by using a stage and satire to drive conversation and camaraderie amongst seemingly disparate groups...and find meaning.

Ingrid teamed with Jessica Mitolo from SCTC to explore how to tweak the improv principles that Second City Works uses in its corporate work, to the unique aspects of healthcare, across its stakeholders. As educators in the arts and sciences, Ingrid, Jessica and Deana Herrman PhD have been creating and employing tailored communication, relationship-building, collaborative decision-making and resilience related curricula with improv and performance to meet the challenges that those concepts present to learning, relationships, healthcare provision and health outcomes within the healthcare sphere.

Moving Forward

Ingrid understands improv to be a powerful tool for learning a myriad of thinking and social skills, skills required by anyone who works in, or is served by, the healthcare industry. She has engaged many people in her performance, teaching and learning activities with IAMAZEBRA and looks forward to engaging so many more people in order to make our healthcare system work for all of us as we navigate all the experiences that make us human.
